• KRC creates banana market linkages outside the Rwenzori region

TWINOMUHWEZI ENOCK

Following the formation of Harugongo-Kicwamba banana marketing Association, Farmers of Harugongo and Kicwamba have successfully started collective marketing of bananas. Farmers have begun joint collection of their matoke from fields selling in bulk to traders who take them directly from Harungongo to Kampala and Entebbe markets.

According to the leaders of the group, this has improved the incomes of the farmers. It must be noted though that the initiative is yet to reach its expected level of output. The farmers’ long run aim is to  sell directly to Kampala and Entebbe Markets, themselves –without going through the middle men

KRC linked Harugongo-Kicwamba Marketing Association to Kampala and Entebbe markets. Through their marketing association, Farmers were able to sell 6796 bananas to Kampala and earned 135,920,000/=. This was earned in 13 transactions, 3 of which were to Kampala and Entebbe markets. This has improved the incomes of the Association and individual members as a result of selling their   matoke through the Association
